Up
As much as I’d love to have the talent to write a Pixar movie, I can’t shy away from these comments.
What if? / Other
Everything was great with this fun and soaring movie until the old man and boy ran into the talking dogs in the wilderness. The movie was based on a cute suspension of disbelief, that the man could fly away in his home thanks to the helium balloons. I wouldn’t call it a What if? (as discussed in that specific category) since the fantasy element in a What if? usually pops into scene earlier and without the main character yet having an objective for it. So whatever you want to call this make believe element in Up, the point is that it was the one fantasy in an otherwise real world.
Then came the talking dogs and I lost much enthusiasm. Yes, the dogs had cute lines and I still recommed the movie overall, but I felt yanked out of the magic at that point, I felt like the story lost its bearing…all because you can’t have two make-believe elements in the real world. Two or more is a fantasy world and then much else needs to be magical. This is Storytelling 101 and it applies to everyone, even the geniuses at Pixar.
