Up In The Air
Very good movie…good example of how a theme can strengthen and unify every aspect of a story.
The end
Act III did a good job with its drama and I liked the surprise that George Clooney’s “friend” was married. What bothered me was the boss, Jason Bateman, backtracking on the video plan setup by the young woman who quit. That was a contradiction of everything explained about the switch to that new system and was implausible to do so just because that one woman left the company.
The more important issue was that the finale could have been clearer and uplifting. George’s boss told him that he’s going back on the road and, after the shock with the married woman, it seemed that George should have said no or at least the movie should not have shown a response. Then when he was at the airport picking a destination (set up earlier), it would have been clearer that he gave up the job and was looking to re-start his life. A flat, muddled ending is poison to a movie and the often light tone of this one, coupled with the downer of the woman being married, demanded a more upbeat final note.
