The Ninth Gate
I don’t recall much from this movie, though I felt it important to comment on one paramount issue- character empathy. The audience needs to feel for the main character. (That doesn’t always mean liking the character or feeling he or she is right.)
Character
Here, the opening sequence showed Johnny Depp ripping off the heirs of a book collection. I hated him for that! The movie was practically over at that point for I didn’t care about him. (That he first offered them seemingly good advice was irrelevant.)
