The Island

When the movie failed, there was discussion about who was at fault- the lack of bigger names in the lead roles, the director, etc. I believe the problem was much simpler- the story.

I actually liked the basic idea behind the movie, a company secretly raising human clones as a spare-parts factory. The problem was that the clones were the main characters, the movie was told from their point of view as they learn what they are and attempt to break free. In all of these movies with a group of oppressed people, we root for them to reach freedom because the injustice against them is obvious and we see ourselves in the people. Here, I couldn’t root for Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansenn because they weren’t fully human. To me, from the point of view of my emotional investment, caring for them would’ve been the same as caring for robots.

With the basic idea above, the story could’ve been told many ways. I won’t waste any more time on this offering suggestions.
