A talent like Amanda Bynes needs a good script asap before she’s forever stuck in mid-level lamery.

The biggest problem was that the movie didn’t know what it was about. It started off as Sydney wanting to fit in at the sorority and then turned sharply to become a different tale of Sydney wanting to defeat the main Kapa girl who mistread her and many others. It could’ve worked with either angle as the storyline of Act 2, but not each one taking up half the movie.

The deeper issue with the above was Sydney’s motivation. She wanted to be a Kapa Sister because her mother went to that sorority…but so what? Despite her mother’s death years ago, wanting to follow in her exact footsteps did not feel like a way for Sydney to get any closer to her memory and being. So for a strong-minded and different girl like her, it didn’t make sense that she’d take the abuse during rush week. A simple approach would’ve worked better- never having girl friends and being all alone on campus, she came to feel that joining that sorority would’ve filled that emptiness in her life. (Similar to Mean Girls.) Then the mother angle (without the legacy element) could’ve been the layer beneath that. Bottomline: the main character needs a clear objective, one that’ll rally the audience to root for her and be plausible in the face of obstacles.

The other main issue was that pretty much all the characters were cut-out stereotypes.
