She’s Out Of My League
This was a weird experience…I watched the movie with the same feeling from beginning to end- neutrality. I didn’t love any part and no part made me want to hit Stop. It just was. Obviously, that’s not a good thing…
Casting
Like There’s Something About Mary, this movie hinged on the actress playing the “perfect” girl and, sorry, Alice Eve was no Cameron Diaz.
Premise
Self-esteem is an awful issue for the main character because how am I supposed to feel for Jay Baruchel when he doesn’t even like himself? Having empathy for the main character is of paramount importance. Look at Seth Rogen at the beginning of Knocked Up- he was happy with his situation in life! He was worse off than Jay in this movie, but did not look down on himself. Big difference. Cluelessness and immaturity are better than a low self-esteem. And when Seth did criticize himself- when he told Katherine Heigl not to mess with him because he’s usually the guy girls screw with- it was in a humorous and revealing way. Jay had no layers and did not make fun of himself.
Little things
- I like Jay, but he overacted with all those ticks and repetitive expressions.
- One of Jay’s friends (not the main one or chubby one) was totally useless to the story.
