Nights in Rodanthe
If not for the ending, it would’ve been a worthy love story.
Structure/Plot & Ending & Character
After Richard Gere said goodbye to Diane Lane at the inn, Diane returned home and settled the contentious issues in her life- decided to not allow her husband back and re-built the relationship with her daughter. Everything was better, everything was fine. Then we learned Richard died and…that was the problem. Diane’s character had no room left on her arc, she peaked too early. Yes, she was pained by the death, but that did nothing to advance or enrich the story.
It wouldn’t have taken much to improve this: After returning home, Diane says no to her husband…makes sense after re-discovering true love with Gere. But the children, and especially the daughter, are still troubled by the news. Then Richard dies and the daughter warms up to her mother through the pain.
In fact, this could’ve been achieved through a simple re-editing of the ending. Why don’t producers do that? After a movie fails in the theaters and the problem is obvious, why not offer a new cut for DVD, cable, etc.?
