Love In The Time of Cholera

One simple flaw ruined what should have been a wonderful tale.

In any romance, be it a drama or comedy, there must be an emotional connection between the man and woman. We need to see how they complete each other, how each has the quality the other needs. This is non-existent in Cholera. Javier Bardem initially likes the girl because she’s beautiful. That’s an okay start for a guy, but the story doesn’t develop his interest. For the next fifty years (or whatever it is), his deep love for the woman is based on this superficial feeling and not something meaningful like she inspires him to a noble trade or her calmness tempers his passion.

Even worse, Bardem spends his time yearning for her…by bedding hundreds of other women. Why should I root for such an animal to succeed? How can the woman he loves then find him favorable? What a waste…
