Jennifer’s Body

This started well and then lost direction.

Structure/Plot

Once Jennifer (Megan Fox) transformed, the movie and characters failed to have an objective or focus. It wasn’t clear what Jennifer was up to (though okay for the ‘why’ to come later) and the idea of her vs. boys was talked about more than it was shown. As for Needy, she didn’t try to stop her friend till the very end, she was all reaction in Act II. This made it undramatic and largely pointless, which is why I dozed off at around the 50-minute mark. Sorry, Diablo Cody.

Show, Don’t Tell

It seemed obvious that Act II should have been about Needy investigating her friend and the indy band in order to learn the truth (while at the same time showing more of Jennifer vs. boys). Instead, Needy had visions- yes, visions!- and one night Jennifer simply told her everything that happened. Ouch.

The end

Due to the failure of Act II to develop Jennifer’s angle, Act III was even more of a letdown. The movie tried to make it seem like Jennifer would go on a rampage at the dance, but it was hard to believe thanks to her limited attacks till then. And sure enough, there was no major threat. I liked that the story tried to make it about the friendship, but that was muddled from the beginning…I never believed 100% that Needy and Jennifer were best friends.
