Inglorious Basterds
My theory- it’s only because many reviewers liked this that people like me gave it a shot. And people like me disliked it. In the half-full theater I saw it in, it was quiet and lacking energy save for a couple of chuckles. And the only reason reviewers liked it is because of Quentin Tarantino’s name on it and an original story. But those were not enough to overlook…
Structure / Plot
Like everything of Tarantino’s since Pulp Fiction, this had only thirty minutes of story. The rest was stretched beyond its limits, there were scenes that unnecessarily lasted forever, had thin characters who merely had occasional good dialogue, and had too much story that didn’t affect the main one. Or you can say that the story lacked a focus till the end. Blame the marketing if you will, but the basterds in question felt like secondary characters.
And leave it to someone like Tarantino to imagine that Jews would act like animals in fighting their enemies. The soliders of X Troop that this is loosely based on acted honorably during WWII, even though that meant the obvious part of killing Germans.
