Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis did not belong in this movie. In the original, they were developments of the story, not the story itself. Or, in other words, they were making a guest appearance on a TV series, as opposed to be being one of the regulars.

The story itself, the basic premise, was about a bunch of guys busting ghosts. While the sequel rightfully came up with another adventure for the Ghostbusters to tackle (though who remembers it?) their presence held the story back.

The idea in this type of sequel is to let go of everything except the kernel of the story. Again, imagine making a TV series- you can’t borrow the same guest characters and storylines every week.
