Galaxy Quest
A cute movie, though I feel it lacked that one, hilarious moment. One outrageous scene- best when close to the end- that says it all and leaves a lasting impression, as in Analyze This.
- The end
It would make more sense to end with the coming attraction of Galaxy Quest: The Movie than the new TV show. First, the film is based on the Star Trek saga and that original cast went from the old series to a movie. (The Next Generation had a new cast and only came around after a few of the old-cast movies.) Second, it’s a bigger jump for the characters to go from their pathetic, one-track lives to the larger-than-life silver screen.
By the end of a movie, the main character needs to end up with more, or something different, than he strived for. If he ends up getting exactly what he battled for, then what has he gained and how has he grown? Rocky lost the first title match, but won respect, admiration and love. The Karate Kid didn’t just win the competition, he became a man and gained his enemy’s respect. Marty McFly didn’t just get back to the future, he got a “future” that was better than his original life. Mrs. Doubtfire got better visitation rights and a better relationship with his ex and a career. DeNiro in Midnight Run didn’t just bring in the Duke on time, he put Sorrano in jail and got enough money to build his coffee shop. Even to a less dramatic degree, Mel Gibson in Payback got more money than he was fighting for.
Look at all the good movies and you’ll see this constant. So in Galaxy Quest, the characters don’t gain enough by renewing their old jobs. They should get more.
