Faster

This movie looked great in the first few moments and Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) was born for such a role. Though two elements kept it from being great throughout.

Structure/Plot

- It was stupid for Dwayne to kill the first guy in public (and then the other guy in the ER). Even without the security camera, many people got a good look and the police would’ve made an accurate sketch. There are reasons this kind of thing rarely happens in revenge/justice movies. Aside from the logic of it, there’s also the fact that the audience needs to root for the protagonist; we want him to kill the bad guys because it’s cathartic. But when he needlessly puts himself in danger, it makes us feel bad for rooting for an idiot. It also blurs the line of morality when such movies need to have it clear- if he’s right, then why does he act recklessly? It makes him seem guilty.

- The assassin out to get Dwayne was unnecessary. That character and situation felt like they belonged in another movie. Aside from being confusing at first, it was also obvious that Billy Bob Thornton was the ultimate bad guy and so the movie should have revealed that earlier and have him try to kill Dwayne while concealing his actions from all others.

Little thing

Why on earth did Dwayne push his gun onto his mother’s head?! Is anyone supposed to keep rooting for a guy who does that? Even if his father had still been alive, what would his mother have done to interfere had he entered the house normally?
