District 9

I give it a thumbs up for most of the reasons everyone else likes it. However…

Little thing / Logic

- In Act I, it was stupid that MNU needed signatures from the aliens in order to evict them. As if any of the aliens would have willingly done so. The simple thing would have been for the agents to go around giving notice about the move to the new camp (even though there also would have been posters and whatnot announcing the move).

- Around the midway point, we learned what the main alien was up to with his fluid: fuel to rejoin the mothership and fly home. If so, why the hell was it a secret for 20 years?! The earthlings wanted the aliens to leave, the aliens wanted to leave, they understood each other’s languages…why didn’t the prawns simply ask the humans for help to find the material to create the fuel? And the answer cannot be- because then there would be no movie. This really surprised me and deflated my interest.

Some may argue that MNU wanted the aliens to remain in Johannesburg in order to continue their genetic experiements. However, they could have done so with a dozen captive aliens, it’s not like they needed 1.5 million of them. The aliens could have announced their plan to the media and then MNU would have had no choice. The movie needed to either explore this point- the MNU hierarchy knew about the plan and thwarted it a few times in the past- or figure a way to bypass it.

The short film “Alive in Joberg” by Neill Blomkamp that led to the feature, District 9.
