Die Harder

Not the worst of sequels, but far from the best.

Sequels

Part of the success of the first was that McLane was in constant danger. He was trapped in the building and was forced to fight the bad guys. The bad guys were looking for him throughout the movie and he was one of many who could’ve died in the explosion at the end. But here, while he faced the bad guys a few times, he always had a safe base- the airport- to retreat to and that removed the sense of urgency and immediacy.

The airport was no man’s land- too big to feel a close threat like the highrise and too small for a larger action story like 3. Not all the Die Hard rip-offs had been done by the time this was made so it makes me wonder why they didn’t play it safe and stay closer to the original.

Objective/Stakes, Logic

He was mainly fighting for his wife in 2, but it didn’t seem that her plane was in such danger. Surely the plane had enough fuel to land in Philadelphia instead of Washington. I mean, if it was able to circle in the storm over Washington, why couldn’t it fly to a nearby city?
