Conspiracy Theory

Where’s the surprise when Mel stumbles upon an actual conspiracy? This would’ve been a great movie had he made sense of a series of seemingly unrelated events that threaten something or someone, only to learn at the end that the events were just that- unrelated, and it was only his paranoia that wove the connection. After all, that’s the whole beauty of a theory- you can create one out of any situation. By making the theory come true, the movie aborts the ‘What if?’ wonderment and turns into a typical get-the-guy-who-knows-too-much thriller, and a forgettable one at that. I don’t remember one bit as to what the bad guys were up to.

There never has, and never will be, a New York City taxi driver as handsome as Mel Gibson. You can say that every movie has a part where you have to suspend disbelief, but I say it can’t be on such a fundamental point. If the movie can’t be real and treat me intelligently from the very beginning, then I can’t accept it. Furthermore, how many handsome crazy people are there? Seriously. Mel’s a stature in real-life was just way beyond the character he portrayed. Which brings me to another point…

With Mel and Julia Roberts as the leads, the movie was over-casted. I feel this is a prime example of packaging and opening-weekend mania gone astray. This could’ve been a grittier and more plausible movie without stars, either no-names or B-Listers.
