Captain America: The First Avenger
It was better than Thor, though not close to the levels of Iron Man, Spider-Man and S2.
Premise
- For a superhero, Cap was not so super. I liked his first action sequence where he chased the car on foot. Problem was, that seemed to be his greatest feat and it was only used that one time. He became stronger, but to the degree of a really strong human. There was a scene where Red Skull punched a dent into Cap’s first shield and I never got the impression that Cap was as powerful. Worse, much of his success in the second half of Act II came from his shield and that meant anyone could have used the shield in the same way (it was lighter than steel so did not require special strength to carry). Related to this, I don’t understand how Cap survived the plane crash at the end and slept for 70 years.
- Iron-Man and Spider-Man were ‘What if?’ stories, where we were asked to accept mostly one make-believe element in the world as we know it. Here, we should have only been asked to accept the super serum and not that magical cube thing (still not sure what it was) and some of Hydra’s futuristic machines.
Objective
In a few posts of late I’ve commented on the hero lacking an objective to push the story forward and this movie did a good job giving Cap a goal. Once Steve Rogers became Captain America, he immediately chased the German spy. After a dip in momentum where he toured the country to raise funds, he returned with a clear line of action- rescue the soldiers and then stop Red Skull (which involved sub-goals of destroying Hydra’s facilities, killing Red Skull and preventing the bombs from hitting their targets).
Little thing
It was weird for Cap’s team of soldiers to not wear uniforms and silly to see some of them, like the Irish guy, in caps that could not have stayed on during battle.
