Be Kind Rewind
I rarely comment on a movie when I didn’t see the whole thing, but I’ll do so here to explain why I left the theater bored after forty minutes.
- Premise, Character, Stakes
Mos Def’s drive to remake the first movie, Ghostbusters, was to prevent the Mia Farrow character from telling his boss about his mishaps at work. So? Who cares? What were the stakes- Mos getting fired? What was special about him that I should have cared about him? And I didn’t feel that recreating movies with Jack Black was any step towards saving the business from demolition.
So it doesn’t matter how clever a movie is, the audience in such a flick always needs to care whether he succeeds or not. Oh, and if it’s a comedy, be funny.
