Back To The Future 2 and 3
- Sequel
The original’s a classic. Here’s the problem with the sequels: The first part of Number 2 is not even what the movie is about. The entire time in the future, where Marty’s kid is in trouble, is all a way-too-long future skit. The end result is old-man Biff getting the Sports Almanac and giving it to his younger self. That’s when things get juicy so that should’ve been the Instigating Act (or Inciting Incident or whatever you want to call the opening hook), not Plot Point I or…whatever)!
Yet, overall, that wouldn’t have worked either. Bare with me on this one. The second part of Number 2 was cute, where everything from the original happens from a different angle. Number 3 was a total waste- not a drop of the original’s wit and charm. The strength of the original was its amazing premise: What if a teen went back in time and met his parents when they were his age? Based on that and the film’s title, the sequels should’ve flowed naturally: Back To The Past and Back To The Present!
The Past would’ve asked: What if a teen travels to the future and meets his own grown-up kids and wife? Just like the original played with the idea that Marty’s father passed on his insecurities, The Past could’ve touched on similar father-son traits.
The Present would’ve been like the second part of Number 2- mixing up the stories and going back to the original. It seemed so obvious to me when I heard they were making sequels.
