A Few Good Men
Character
When’s the last time a young, pretty woman did not develop a romantic connection with the male lead? That was refreshing. What bothered me was that Demi Moore’s character felt more like a tool of the writer’s than an actual character in the film. She was constantly pressing Tom Cruise- especially in the first half- to take the case, to think of the Marines, to reach his potential, etc. It was too shmaltzy and too unbelievable considering she didn’t know Cruise.
I would’ve accepted her more had she been an ex-flame of Cruise’s and his legal cowardry was the reason she split. Now, they’re forced back together and she has a reason to encourage him. Better yet, he has a reason to prove he’s not so shallow (though the two wouldn’t necessarily get back together- that would still be original and refreshing).
The best thing, though, would’ve been to strengthen Demi’s POV, how she’s an upright, loyal member of the military and appreciates what others like Corporal Dawson are doing for her safety.
